Will I have to purchase materials?
Generally no. Many of the books read are available online or are easily obtainable from your local library. However, there will be times when you will be asked to purchase a specific translation of a work. When such a situation arises, you will be provided with links where you can purchase an affordable copy online.
How long are the readings?
Reading length varies from book to book. Simple readings are taken in larger chunks and challenging readings are broken into achievable sections.
How long are the meetings?
The meetings are generally 1.5 hours long. Meetings start at 7pm MT/MST and end at 8:30pm. Some meetings have a tendency to run longer if the discussion is particularly absorbing, however members are not obligated to stay past 8:30pm, if they need to be thinking about supper and bed.
Do I need a Google account to use GoogleMeet?
No, you do not. A meeting link is sent to all members prior to each meeting.
I have never used the Socratic discussion method. How can I prepare?
The Socratic discussion method is very simple and, despite being named after a Greek philosopher, is nothing to be concerned about. You can begin by reading this article, “What is the Socratic Method?” During the first meeting, Nicole will further explain how to use the Socratic discussion method.
