What are fairy-stories? What is their origin? What is the use of them? J.R.R. Tolkien wrestles with these questions in his essay “On Fairy Stories.” We’ll read and discuss his ideas alongside some of the fairy-stories he analyses. From Thomas the Rhymer to The Tailor of Gloucester, decide for yourself what you think classifies a “fairy-story.”

  1. Looking forward to the Wordstapas this fall! What a splendid idea, pairing “On Fairy-Stories” with some of the fairy tales that Tolkien discusses. I can hardly wait!
